Da Gama Textiles is proud to have sponsored and collaborated with various South African fashion designers over the years to showcase The Original Shweshwe product. These designers have reinterpreted tradition to create fushion fashion collections of extraordinary beauty and appeal.

Designer - Bongiwe Walaza

Bongiwe Walaza, a renowned South African clothes designer, grew up the daughter of a home dressmaker, learning to make clothes from her mother's fabrics.

She began designing and making dresses for herself and, subsequent to her studies in Electrical Engineering, she enrolled at Natal Technikon to learn more about dressmaking and design.

Designer - Amanda Laird Cherry

amandalairdcherry Amanda Laird Cherry is one of South Africa’s most established designers. The acclaim she has received is as universal as it gets in South African fashion, with publications as varied as Y-Mag and Time Magazine shouting her praises.

Amanda is one of a small handful of South African designers who has fused the development of her clothes with that of the country. Her collections over the past decade have presented a different kind of reconciliation process, one which unites our intersecting histories into a collective present.

Amanda has collaborated on numerous occasions with Da Gama Textiles, designing collections based on shweshwe and other fabrics for the South African Fashion Week catwalk.
