Pioneering Protection: The Evolution of Da Gama’s D59 Workwear Fabrics

Since its establishment in 1948 as the Good Hope Textile Corporation (Pty) Ltd, Da Gama has been at the forefront of textile innovation. With a proud workwear heritage dating back to the early 1980s, Da Gama has continuously evolved its range of fabrics, particularly the renowned D59 line. As Da Gama celebrates 40 years of D59 excellence, let’s take a closer look at the remarkable evolution of this iconic product range.

Generation One – D59
The journey of D59 began with the development of a 100% cotton Drill fabric designed to meet the SANS1387-4 Type D59 Specification. Since its certification by SABS in 1984, D59 has remained synonymous with quality and durability. The unique back stamp/watermark design ensures the authenticity of Da Gama textiles, setting the standard for generations to come.

Generation Two – D59 Flame Acid
Responding to industry demands, Da Gama introduced the second generation of D59 fabrics with specialised finishes to address flame and chemical threats. The innovative flame-retardant and acid-resistant treatments offer unparalleled protection, while the manufacturing process ensures durability and wash resistance.

Generation Three – D59X Antistatic
Building upon the success of D59 flame acid, Da Gama incorporated an antistatic element into the fabric, certified to EN1149-5. This enhancement provides comprehensive protection against flame, chemical and static spark hazards, ensuring safety in diverse work environments.

Generation Four – Da Gama Arc
Da Gama raised the bar with the introduction of Da Gama Arc, a cotton/nylon blend fabric offering superior protection against electrical arc, flame, chemical hazards and static spark generation. Rated at 15 Cal against the EN61482 Open Arc standard, Da Gama Arc sets a new standard in workwear fabric performance.

Generation Five – Da Gama Macintosh
Expanding its protective capabilities, Da Gama unveiled the Da Gama Macintosh, a weatherproof option for workers exposed to the elements. Tested for flame, acid and waterproof properties, Da Gama Macintosh offers comprehensive protection against rain, wind and chemical hazards, with features like 3m waterhead and breathable properties.

Proudly South African
Da Gama remains committed to supporting local industries and communities. By increasing local content contributions and partnering with local textile mills, Da Gama ensures the sustainability and growth of the South African textile industry.

Wash Care
Recognising the importance of proper wash care, Da Gama provides recommended instructions to maximise the performance and lifespan of D59 fabrics. Hot ironing after every wash cycle ensures the regeneration of water-repellent and acid-resistant finishes, maintaining the fabric’s protective properties.

As Da Gama celebrates four decades of D59 excellence, its commitment to innovation, quality and safety  remains unwavering. From our humble beginnings to our current status as a pioneer in workwear fabric technology, Da Gama continues to set the standard for protection and performance in the workplace with the D59 workwear fabrics.

With each generation, Da Gama reaffirms its dedication to providing workers with the highest level of safety and comfort, ensuring they can face any challenge with confidence.
